In November 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer at the age of 43 years old.  Otherwise very healthy, this diagnosis came as a sudden surprise after experiencing what could have been ignorable symptoms.  My physician and surgeon, Dr. Sarah Gill, did heroic work in meticulously removing all visible cancer in surgery. Because it was not found until it had advanced (as is the care with most ovarian cancer), I still had to undergo 4.5 months of chemotherapy treatment to try and eliminate any remaining cancer cells.  During this time, I asked for and was referred to MD Anderson for a second consultation, as they are a leader in research on better treatments for ovarian cancer, and hopefully, one day, a cure.  After completing chemotherapy in Savannah, I was eligible for a second surgery to biopsy for any minimal residual disease, with the possibility of a trial for maintenance therapy if there was any found.  By God's amazing grace, my physician there, Dr. Sims, found no MRD.  From here it is continued close monitoring and prayer that I remain in remission.  I am grateful for the many prayers, much love, and amazing support of so many people in my life throughout this journey.

In the fall of 2024, I started intermittently jogging when walking our dog, Naomi.  Over several months, we have both worked up to being able to run several miles together.  While I never really enjoyed running, I have learned to love it, perhaps because I just continue to be grateful each day that I am here and can do it!  I am working to run the the YMCA Critz Tybee, Southern Cross Hospitality 10K on February, 1, 2025 in teal to raise awareness of and raise support for research for ovarian cancer.  I do so in honor of my physicians (Dr. Gill and Dr. Sims); my amazing husband, children, and family; all those who have and continue to love me through this journey; and the amazing women I know who are fighting cancer, in remission, or are survivors, and in memory of those who have lost their lives to this challenging disease.

I still cannot talk very much about my journey without tears, so this is one way that I can say thank you to those who have been with me, and to support finding earlier detection, better treatment, and the hope for a cure for ovarian cancer.

I invite you to join me in championing MD Anderson and its mission to end cancer. Your donation to my fundraising page will play a vital role in ensuring that there continues to be research to find better treatments and cures to end cancer.

Your generous donation (100%!) will contribute to:

  • Groundbreaking research that will save lives worldwide
  • Enhancements in cancer care delivery and availability for those affected by cancer.
  • Advancements in diagnostic tools and tests, leading to improved early detection, treatments, and the overall quality of life for cancer survivors.
